What is it with Sporting Lagos and Goalkeepers?

By David Odunlami

July 31st 2025, 12:00:00 am

Last week, our fans voted Clinton Lawani as our 2024/25 NNL Player of the Season.

He started the campaign on the bench and finished it as a calm, steady presence between the sticks with some big saves and big moments, almost taking us over the line.

Clinton — Rexona Player of the Season

Abdullahi Usman and Abdulraheem Suleiman followed as runners-up.

Clinton now joins a short but strong line of Sporting Lagos goalkeepers who, in their own contexts, have been genuinely iconic. So who are they?

“SPIDER, SPIDER, SPIDER-MAN.”

Great wall

Christian Nwoke earned that chant the hard way. You face Christian with a pressure moment, and he will come through. Penalty saves in the promotion season (regular season and playoffs against Stormers), a shootout hero against Remo in our first trophy at the Naija Super 8, and decisive moments in the NPFL, including that comeback against Abia Warriors. He also became the first Sporting Lagos player to move to our sister club, Aarhus Fremad in Denmark. The standard he set is the one Clinton met this season.

EBENEZER HARCOURT — A NATIONAL U-20 HERO AT 15

Ebenezer Harcourt

Ebenezer represents the present and the future. At the Gothia Puma Trophy 2024, he made crucial stops (including a penalty vs Östers IF), held his nerve in the shootout against ASEC to push us through to the semis, and even provided an assist for John Lucky in the final as we won the tournament. For country, he saved penalties against Senegal in the U-20 AFCON quarter-final to reach the semis, featured at the U-20 WAFU-B Cup (2024), and now starts for the Nigeria U-20. He’d already been called into Super Eagles B at just 15.

AGBOR EKOI (IN MEMORIAM)

Agbor

Our first-ever match had Agbor in goal. Across three years, he set early standards for the position, among them a vital penalty save against Apex Krane in a survival fight during our first season. Agbor had national-team experience, mentored Christian, and was a generous teammate. Sadly, he passed away late last year. We remember him very fondly and miss him.

ONE TO WATCH

Gaffar Ahmed, Academy Goalkeeper

Gaffar Ahmed is already quietly but steadily making a name for himself as a goalkeeper in our Academy. A few crucial penalty saves under his belt and some more game-saving ones mean it's only a matter of time before his breakout happens and we begin to see him in the headlines soon.

THE WORK BEHIND THE SCENES

Coach Isa and Coach Nasamu

Keeper standards don’t come by accident. They come from repetition, good decision-making, and clear communication, and this isn't just from players, but from staff too. Our goalkeeping coaches, UEFA/CAF Licensed Abdullahi Isa, who's an ex-Nigeria international, has been a consistent hand on that training ground, and will be proud of the work he's done with our goalkeeping department.

Always alongside him coach Emmanuel Nasamu, who has gone from being a Sporting Lagos goalkeeper in our first and second seasons to being the goalkeeping coach for the Academy. Beyond skill, he brings energy and experience as a recently retired professional, and these go a long way in mentally conditioning the boys.

Don't miss the next big save. Stay in touch.
